Nootropics: What Exactly Are Nootropics?
Although nootropics are starting to become more popular, many individuals still do not know exactly what they are. In its most basic definition, nootropics are simply drugs that help to enhance the cognitive qualities of the brain. They have been around for many years now, and you may have previously heard them be referred to as “smart drugs”. Scientific studies have helped to prove that nootropics can boost the average individual’s memory, confidence levels, personal motivation, and overall brain function. Essentially, these compounds have amazing effects on the body that literally anyone can benefit from. |
How do Nootropics Work?
The main way that nootropics work so successfully is because they act as an additive to neurochemicals that are already present in the brain. These chemicals can be a multitude of things, including enzymes, hormones, and neurotransmitters, and all of them help improve important cognitive functions. In addition to improving cognitive functions, they also have the ability to increase the blood supply that is directed to the brain, and increase the brain’s overall nerve growth.
One of the best parts about nootropics is that they are completely safe and do not cause any negative side effects. Numerous studies have been done in order to validate this, and many individuals have taken these compounds for years without suffering from any detrimental effects. We will touch on this subject again in a later chapter, but for now, it is important to keep in mind that there are little to no side effects that you must worry about when consistently consuming nootropics.
What constitutes a “Good” Nootropic, and how is This Different From Other Nootropics?
In order to properly define nootropics and make it clear what is considered a nootropic in the first place, Giurgea made a list of criteria that a chemical must meet in order to be officially considered a nootropic. The purpose of this list was mainly to educate the public and help make it easier for individuals to successfully identify nootropics.

Guidelines That a Nootropic Must Meet:
- A nootropic must help protect the brain and keep it safe from both physical and chemical injuries
- A nootropic must enhance the cognitive abilities of the brain and prevent these abilities from being disrupted by certain health conditions.
- A nootropic must help enhance the brain’s memory, concentration, and ability to efficiently learn.
- A nootropic must not be toxic and must have very few potential side effects, if any.
- Finally, a nootropic must also enhance both the cortical and subcortical control mechanisms that are within the brain.
