Boron: My Experience by Gary Hopkins
July, 2016
To give you a little background on myself, I have been regularly experimenting with many different types of nutrients and herbs for therapeutic effect over the last several years. Since I am not fond of using western medicine’s pharmaceuticals, this started as my attempt to help self-correct with many issues that I have experienced over time. To date, I have been very successful in healing myself of many different ailments through this trial and error process that are common among most people that I meet.
Recently while casually reading some articles on the Internet, I came across the mineral Boron and started learning about many of its benefits in the body. It turns out that this trace mineral is crucial to the human body in many ways. It is helpful with boosting the immune system, diminishing inflammation, reversing arthritic conditions, as well as helping the body balance its hormones in men and women. This is just some of what Boron does in the body which is significant by itself.
I have had gout and related osteoarthritic issues for many years and although I have found many herbs, vitamins and diet remedies that work well for me, I am always on the lookout for additional help for the random inflammation that shows up in my joints from time to time.
After reading the article from the Chef Lynda website (link below) I decided to give Boron a try. Upon discovering it was very cheap to make, I used the suggested Borax recipe in the article and got started immediately the same day.
*Note: Borax is Sodium Tetraborate which is a mineral that is 11% Boron by volume. When buying Borax make sure that Sodium Tetraborate is the only ingredient on the ingredient list, this ensures that you will not ingest any added toxic perfumes or additives to your mineral solution, or you can purchase a Boron supplement if you wish. I prefer to make my own which saves me money and allows me to know exactly what I am consuming.
Here is how I make my solution:
Items needed
> 1 box of Borax - A box of Borax runs about $4 or $5 at the grocery store
> 1 Gallon distilled water
> 1 32 oz. mason jar or similar glass container.
Step 1: Take 5 or 6 grams of the powdered Borax (about a rounded teaspoon) and put into the mason jar
Step 2: Heat 8 oz. of distilled water (I microwave mine for 2 minutes) then pour the hot water into the mason jar, put on the lid and shake until the Borax is completely dissolved
Step 3: Fill the mason jar to the neck just under the bottom of the lid (makes about 32 ounces total) with distilled water and then refrigerate and dose accordingly
Dosing:
Generally speaking the amount of Boron you take depends on the individual sensitivity you have to the solution. Depending on where you read the dose is between 10 and 30 milligrams a day with some time off after a few weeks of dosing. If you take too much at one time Boron can upset your stomach so low dosing and breaking up the dosing over the day is advised.
One teaspoon of the solution above contains about 3 milligrams of Boron. So depending on how you want to dose will determine how many teaspoons you take at one time. Keep in mind this is a trace mineral so not much is needed for a therapeutic effect. What dose you settle on is something you will need to figure out on your own. However my suggestion with Boron is to start slow and tweak over time, while monitoring any effects that you notice.
My initial dose was 1 teaspoon 3 times a day, which after about a week I increased to 2 teaspoons 3 times a day. After a few more days I tweaked that dose to 3 teaspoons twice a day (since a morning and evening dose was easier to manage with my schedule) which I did for a couple of weeks. This equated to about 18 milligrams total of boron a day.
After about 2 months I have settled on the following regimen for myself:
I take 2 to 3 teaspoons of the Boron solution twice a day Monday through Friday, and none on the weekends. This allows me a steady ingestion of Boron and time off every week for my body to acclimate and process properly. This is a loose regimen and gives me latitude to increase or decrease the dose depending on how I feel on any given day. For instance, If my joints feel a little stiff then I add an extra teaspoon at my dosing times, if I feel good, then I just do the minimum. After you get comfortable working with this solution you will get to a point where you will find the right dose for you. Just keep in mind that too much will upset your stomach so go slow in the beginning when experimenting. Over time you will acclimate and be able to do a little more without any problems.
Some Noticeable Benefits:
In most places that I have read about Boron they do say that it can take some time to start seeing the benefits listed, and most agree on 2 to 3 months before any real changes are definitively felt. However, after only a few days of taking Boron I noticed that the level of inflammation in my joints after physical activity was diminished. My stamina seemed to increase and mechanically (in my joints) I felt like I was moving a little better over all. After 2 months of dosing I can say that I have seen a pretty good difference overall in how I feel even when I am just lumbering around. In my downtime I do not get as stiff from just sitting still like I used to before and I seem to recover quicker from any exercise that I may do. Of course, I am still new to using Boron but so far it has been a positive experience and that is why I have written this article to share with you.
Additionally, please take the time to read the articles included below so that you will get a better idea of how other people are using Boron as a supplement as well as the regimen that I have settled on. This will help you paint a bigger picture of how to use Boron the best way for you.
